The address Clark gave us was a bar. It was called Manny's. It was filled with gangsters, pimps, and lowlifes. Right off the bat I knew we were going to have trouble. We walked up to the bar and ordered two beers. The barman was a small, rat-faced man with thinning hair on top. He also had a perpetual scowl on his face, which gave him a permanent look of disdain for his customers.

After he paid for the beers, Stuart said, “We're looking for a guy named Willie-Pete. Is he around?”

The bartender looked us up and down before saying, “Don't know nobody by that name.”

“We were told he hangs out here,” Stuart said back to him.

“Are you sure?” I asked, slipping a ten-dollar bill across the counter.

The man looked down at it for a moment before picking it up. He glanced over my shoulder towards a table near the front window. A young man sat there with two women. Both were prostitutes. “If he was sitting over there by that window, I never saw him.”

Stuart and I nodded our thanks, picked up our beers and walked across to the table. I placed my 1911 on top of the table, and said, “Take a hike, ladies.”

Willie-Pete looked up, taken aback by what had just happened. “What the fuck you guys think you're doing?”

“We want a word with you, Willie,” I said. “We can do this easy way or the hard way.”

The women rose to their feet and beat a hasty exit. But Willie had a sneer on his face. “I don't believe you two know who the fuck you're dealing with.”

“How about you tell me, Willie,” I said.

“I'm Willie-Pete. I run this part of the Bronx. I could have you killed just like that.” He snapped his fingers to accentuate his point.

I leaned forward and place my hand on the butt of the gun sitting on the table. I grinned wickedly. “My name is John ‘Reaper’ Kane and I'll kill you right now if you don't answer my questions.”

Willie-Pete stared at me, unsure of what was happening. He looked around and caught the attention of someone I couldn’t see. I caught movement out of the corner of my eye and lifted the gun, pointing it in that direction. “You want a part of this, keep coming, motherfucker.”

The man looked as though he considered himself to be tough. I said, “And don’t give me that fucking look. I’ve shit more assholes like you who thought they were tough. You aren’t even the skid mark on old Willie’s drawers. Now, sit the fuck down.”

The man backpedaled and took a seat on a stool. The crowd who’d been around us moved back as well. Stuart said, “You’re mean, Kane.”

“I’ve had more top kicks scarier than he’s had hot meals.”

Stuart fixed his gaze on Willie-Pete. “We only came here for a sociable chat. You want to do it here or outside?”

The man sighed. “Here will do. If I go outside with you two, I’m liable to turn up dead in the morning.
